Wow! He is simply not worth that money. This statement from capgeek says it all:

CapGeek ‏@capgeek 3m

If the cap were $64.3M in 2014-15 -- and it will likely go up -- it would only leave the #Penguins with $1.17M per remaining roster spot.

I'm not a fan of his defensive game. I think this contract will be come an albatross in 3 to 4 years.

Too true. It's like NJ's situation with Clarkson. He isn't worth the money he is expecting, but if he leaves, it's more goals NJ has to replace.

Sign and trade?

With Pittsburgh's salary structure they are going to have to find depth players from the local beer league. Lots of money tied up in just a few guys.

Only a limited no trade contract. He must name 15 teams where he would go. Hints of a possible sign and trade before his current contract expires next year. People forget, new contract does not kick in for another year.

Don't you guys have the same issues? Tons of top end talent that are paid top dollar.

They won't. They're just trying to squeeze Florida, who has made no secret of how much they want McKinnon.

they have top end players but no one making over 6.3mil cap hit. Plus the Blackhawaks can actually draft good players in late rounds and develop them to go along with their expensive players.

That's because Letang stated that he would only sign the contract with a 24K solid gold pen. It is still being casted.

So a statement that hypothetically looks into the future 2 years from now says it all? I highly doubt the cap will be that plus players currently on the roster will have their contracts expire by now. That statement means nothing.

In a way yes, but we have more players locked up with more money left to spend in comparison to the penguins

This. Overpayment but what were the other options? Can't believe we gave Streit 4 years.

That's one year from now. And it's not purely hypothetical, it's an educated guess with a high probability of being correct. Expecting the cap to be massively different from one year of revenue is just being dense. It'll be somewhere around 70mil. Pens will have 1.3ish million per player they need to sign.
